Kim Se-yeon (23rd Judicial Research and Training Institute) was appointed as a Commissioner of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC).
SIAC is a leading international arbitration institution in Asia that opened in 1991. There are about 30 Commissioners in the SIAC arbitration court, and Kim is the only Korean among them. She is the first Korean female attorney to become a Commissioner.
After graduating from Seoul National University's School of Law, Kim passed the 33rd National Judicial Examination. She served as a judge from 1994 to 2001 before becoming an attorney. She has served as a Commissioner of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) International Arbitration Court. Currently, she is also the president of the Korean Commercial Arbitration Institute (KOCIA), a member of the International Arbitration Committee of the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB International), a member of the Mumbai Centre for International Arbitration (MCIA), and a Commissioner of the Swiss Arbitration Centre.
Recently, she led a victory in an arbitration case regarding a breach of a shareholders' agreement between domestic corporations and Swiss shareholders, representing the domestic corporations.
Kim noted, "SIAC is currently the most preferred arbitration institution for parties in Asia, including Korea, and I am pleased to be able to contribute as a Commissioner of SIAC." She added, "Utilizing my experience as a judge in Korea and a Commissioner in other arbitration institutions, I will help SIAC function effectively and efficiently as an arbitration institution to resolve disputes for the parties."
