On the 2nd, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety said, "There were no candidates who passed all procedures required for the appointment as the director of the Presidential Archives, so the hiring process has been terminated."
On the same day, the ministry disclosed this in a text message sent to the press corps.
Previously, there were rumors that a figure from the Yoon Suk-yeol government participated in the hiring for the position of director of the Presidential Archives. The director of the Presidential Archives is the chief responsible person who holds, manages, and supervises presidential records. The director has roles such as prohibiting the movement and reclassification of presidential records, which need to be transferred to the Presidential Archives when the president leaves office.
However, the ministry noted, "The personal information of each candidate, including which procedures were not passed, is a matter related to examination and personnel management, and personal information," adding, "It cannot be disclosed according to the Act on the Disclosure of Information by Public Agencies and the Personal Information Protection Act."
Accordingly, there is a prevailing observation that the hiring for the new director of the Presidential Archives will likely take place in the next government after the presidential election on June 3.
Previously, current director Lee Dong-hyeok was appointed to the position for a term of five years in November 2023.
