A shell exploded in a residential area of Gangneung, Gangwon Province, injuring residents.
According to police and others on the 28th, a military shell exploded during the sorting of scrap at a dwelling in Ippam-dong, Gangneung, around 4:32 p.m. the previous day.
As a result of the incident, A (84) suffered serious injuries and was transported by helicopter to a large hospital in Wonju. B (80) sustained first-degree burns all over his body and was transferred to a burn specialist hospital in the metropolitan area, while C (61) was also injured and is receiving treatment.
A was known to have run a scrap business, collecting scrap materials at his dwelling. Nearby residents told Yonhap News that at the time of the explosion, they heard "the sound of thunder and lightning, and the entire neighborhood filled with thick smoke, and there was a pungent smell."
Military authorities reportedly collected more than ten military shells from the site. Police and others are investigating when the shells were made and how they ended up at the scrap business.
