A YouTuber who disclosed the identities of the perpetrators of a sexual assault case that occurred in Miryang, Gyeongnam, about 20 years ago, was sentenced to a prison term without proper verification.
According to the legal community on the 18th, Director General Woo Sang-beom of the 6th Criminal Division of the Changwon District Court sentenced a 20-year-old who operates the YouTube channel "Executor" to three years in prison on charges of violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Protection of Information (defamation). A restitution of 5.66 million won was also ordered.
The individual was indicted for uploading videos containing the identities of the perpetrators of the Miryang sexual assault case on their YouTube channel from June to August of last year.
The individual is also facing charges for obstructing the business of a restaurant operated by the family of a person identified as a perpetrator in the Miryang sexual assault case by publicly disclosing it. They created the videos as if the information obtained from unclear reports or internet searches were factual.
The court stated, "The phenomenon of observing false information through YouTube or social media has reached a level that our society can no longer tolerate," and noted, "It is necessary to ensure a minimum level of credibility by imposing severe penalties for such actions."
A verdict for the YouTuber "Battle Rabbit," who has been prosecuted for disclosing the identities of the perpetrators of the Miryang sexual assault case, is scheduled to be announced on the 23rd of next month.
