In relation to the upcoming presidential election, which is expected to be held on June 3, the police have decided to prepare security measures for major presidential candidates.
Park Hyun-soo, the acting chief of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, noted at a press conference on the 7th, "We are establishing plans at the level of the Korean National Police Agency regarding security for the presidential election." He added, "On the 4th, an announcement was made regarding the selection of a dedicated security team for the presidential candidates," and stated, "A dedicated security team will be selected accordingly and will be deployed at a certain point."
Acting Chief Park stated, "The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency will provide support not only from the dedicated security team but also from detectives of local police stations, including mobile units and local police, for the full-scale election campaigning of the presidential candidates," and emphasized, "We will prepare thoroughly for this."
Earlier, the Constitutional Court sentenced former President Yoon Suk-yeol to removal from office on the 4th. According to the Constitution and the Public Official Election Act, a presidential election must be held within 60 days from the day after the Constitutional Court finalizes the impeachment of the president.
Acting President Han Duck-soo, who is also the Prime Minister, must designate a day between May 24 and June 3 as the presidential election date. The government plans to present and confirm the item for holding the presidential election on June 3 at the Cabinet meeting scheduled for the 8th.
Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party and a leading presidential candidate, was attacked with a weapon while inspecting the site for the construction of the Busan Gadeokdo International Airport on January 2 of last year. Since last month, Lee has been receiving police protection due to assassination threats. However, it has not been decided whether the police protecting him will be replaced by the dedicated security team for presidential candidates if he runs for the election.
