As the forest fire that broke out in Sancheong, Gyeongnam, continues for the tenth day, the forestry authorities are focusing on extinguishing the main fire within 200 meters of the outskirts of Jirisan.
On the 30th, Lim Sang-seob, the head of the Korea Forest Service, held a briefing at the fire site and noted, "The embers within the thick layer of fallen leaves and rock layers have revived in some areas," adding, "The weather conditions are favorable, and the deployment of helicopters and personnel is proceeding as planned, so we will do our best to extinguish the main fire today."
According to the forestry authorities, the containment rate was recorded at 99% as of 8 a.m. on the same day.
The forestry authorities failed to extinguish the main fire in the Jirisan area the previous day due to the rugged terrain, deploying 996 personnel and 201 vehicles after sunset for an overnight firefighting operation.
It is assessed that the fire spreading into the Jirisan National Park has been completely contained.
However, overnight, embers revived near Dosolam, located on the outskirts of the national park, forming a fire line of about 200 meters.
With sunrise, 50 helicopters have been deployed along with 1,473 personnel and 213 vehicles to contain the flames.
The area affected by the forest fire is 1,858 hectares, with a total fire line of 71.2 kilometers, and the remaining length is 0.2 kilometers.
The human casualties caused by the forest fire include 4 dead and 10 injured, totaling 14.
Displacement of evacuees has also prolonged, with 473 people currently staying in 7 locations, including Donguibogamchon in Sancheong.
