The police transferred the biological mother of an elementary school student who died in a fire while home alone to the prosecution on charges of neglect.
Incheon Western Police Agency said on the 30th that they have placed a woman in her 40s, referred to as A, under non-custodial status on charges of neglect under the Child Welfare Act and transferred the case to the prosecution.
A is accused of leaving her 12-year-old daughter, referred to as B, home alone at their residence in Seo-gu, Incheon, on the morning of the 26th of last month.
B was seriously injured in the fire that broke out at home that day and was taken to the hospital for treatment but ultimately died.
At the time, B's mother was at work in a restaurant, and her father was at the hospital for dialysis, leaving the house unattended.
The police determined that neglect charges were warranted based on B being alone and the cleanliness of the home.
A police official noted, "Recently, we have transferred A to the prosecution," adding, "B's father was not charged considering his health condition and cognitive abilities."
