The police said on the 17th that they are strengthening intelligence-gathering activities related to threats to kill Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party.
A police official from the National Police Agency stated at a regular press briefing that they are enhancing intelligence gathering in response to reports in the media. He noted that, "If significant clues are secured, we will conduct a swift and thorough investigation," and added that the Democratic Party has requested personal protection for Lee and is currently in discussions about it.
However, he said, "We have not officially received a request for investigation or a report regarding this matter, and there are no confirmed specific criminal charges."
On the 12th, the Democratic Party reported that several lawmakers received text messages stating that there is a plan to assassinate Lee with smuggled Russian-made handguns. They also announced that they would cancel some of Lee's scheduled activities and request police protection.
An official from the National Police Agency mentioned that the police are providing personal protection not only for Lee but also for the Constitutional Court judges preparing for the impeachment ruling against President Yoon Suk-yeol and three judges from the Seoul Western District Court.
