In Ulsan, a high school student was transported to a hospital after experiencing a health issue during an activity but ultimately died. Police are investigating the exact cause of death for student A.
According to the Ulsan Office of Education on the 11th, at around 2:55 p.m. the previous day, high school freshman A began exhibiting symptoms such as hyperventilation while participating in a climbing activity at the Ulsan Student Educational Center in Ulju-gun. At that time, on-site personnel immediately lowered A from a height of about 3 meters, administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and called 119. A nurse was also summoned.
A was urgently transported to a nearby hospital by the 119 emergency team for treatment but ultimately died. The activity A participated in was part of the Happiness Communication Education program conducted at the Ulsan Student Educational Center, designed for first-year high school students in response to school applications. The school reportedly applied for a 1-night, 2-day residential program. The day in question was the first day of the 1-night, 2-day course.
At the time of the activity, it was confirmed that there were five qualified instructors and dispatched teachers present. A representative from the Office of Education said, "A was not listed among the students reported with health issues when applying for the activity" and "It appears that theoretical lessons and warm-ups were conducted prior to climbing, and checks were made to see if any students were feeling unwell."
The Office of Education is establishing a task force led by the Director General of Education to confirm the details of the incident. Additionally, a psychological support team will be created to provide psychological assistance to other students. The Ulsan Student Educational Center is set to suspend programs for two weeks and conduct safety inspections. The Student Educational Center is a training facility established for the purpose of developing students' physical and mental skills, according to the local government ordinance on the establishment of administrative organizations for the Office of Education.
