It has been reported that 3 million yellowtail have died en masse at a fish farm off the coast of Yeosu, South Jeolla Province.
According to the city of Yeosu on the 28th, about 2,982,000 yellowtail have died at 70 fish farms over approximately 18 days from the 10th to this day. The estimated damage amounts to 8 billion won.
This mass die-off of yellowtail was attributed to the climate crisis. Yellowtail are weak against cold temperatures, with a tolerance limit of 6 degrees Celsius, but the water temperature in the area recently fell to 4 degrees, lower than the average of 8 degrees.
Meanwhile, the city of Yeosu plans to encourage the early shipment of temperature-sensitive fish species and is set to conduct on-site inspections of fish farms, but the scale of the damage continues to grow.
Additionally, the Namhae Marine Research Institute plans to conduct a joint investigation with the city of Yeosu next week.
