On the 25th, the Constitutional Court concluded the final arguments in the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk Yeol. The date for announcing the decision on whether to impeach President Yoon will be decided later.
The Constitutional Court conducted 11 hearings in the impeachment trial of President Yoon. Former President Park Geun-hye had 17 hearings before being removed from office with an impeachment ruling made 11 days later. Former President Roh Moo-hyun passed through 7 hearings before returning to office with an impeachment dismissal decision made 14 days later.
In the past, the announcement dates for the decisions on the impeachment of the two presidents were determined 2 to 3 days beforehand. The Constitutional Court notified both sides of the decision date, specifying it two days before the ruling in the case of former President Park and three days prior in the case of former President Roh.
Our Constitution states that "if a president is removed from office due to an impeachment decision, a successor must be elected within 60 days." The 19th presidential election was held on May 9, 2017, exactly 60 days after the impeachment decision against former President Park.
