Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) filed a complaint with the police against five membership members who purchased hundreds of millions of won worth of tickets over the past five years and canceled most of them, disrupting operations.
The Daejeon Eastern Police Station stated on the 24th that it received a complaint requesting an investigation into the five individuals suspected of interfering with KORAIL's rail operations.
According to the complaint, they purchased tickets worth 2.93 billion won (49,552 tickets) over the past five years and canceled tickets worth 2.9 billion won (48,762 tickets). The cancellation rate reached 99.2%.
The person who purchased the most per capita was Mr. A, who bought tickets worth 1.607 billion won (33,385 tickets) and canceled 1.595 billion won (31,144 tickets) at a cancellation rate of 99.2%.
Mr. A returned the tickets within an average of seven days after making the payment through the website.
The average purchase amount for the remaining four individuals was between 160 million won and 580 million won, and two of them returned their tickets immediately on the day of purchase.
The reason they repeatedly canceled after buying large quantities of tickets is interpreted as an attempt to accumulate card achievements through the number of transactions.
KORAIL stated in the complaint, "It is judged that the repeated purchase and cancellation of large quantities of tickets without the intention of actually using the train is an attempt to gain benefits through increased card achievements due to the number of transactions," and "Customers wanting the desired tickets were unable to purchase them, and the corporation also faced significant disruption in its operations due to the inability to carry out normal ticket sales."
