On the 19th, the Suwon District Court Criminal Division 13 (Director General Park Jung-ho) sentenced the Democratic Party member Lee Sang-sik to a fine of 3 million won for underreporting assets during the April 10 election last year.
According to the Public Official Election Act, if an elected public official is confirmed to have violated the Public Official Election Act and receives a sentence of imprisonment or a fine of 1 million won or more, their election is invalidated.
During the asset declaration process for the April 10 election last year, Lee was indicted without detention on October 7 of the same year for allegedly underreporting total assets of 9.6 billion won to about 7.3 billion won. The prosecution believes that Lee underreported the value of art owned by their spouse, which exceeds 4 billion won, lowering it to 1.78 billion won.
At that time, Lee stated, "The art owned by my spouse was valued at 1.5 billion won in 2020," and "Although the values of works like Lee Ufan's have surged 3 to 4 times recently, I have not paid taxes because I still hold the works as of 2024, so it is only unrealized gains."
The court found the accomplice, spouse A, not guilty on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence.
Earlier, the prosecution sought a six-month prison sentence for Lee, claiming that Lee deceived voters and obstructed the legitimate exercise of voting rights while denying the crime.
