The subway station with the most passengers last year was Jamsil Station on Line 2, according to data released on the 19th. The Seoul Transportation Corporation announced the '2024 Transportation Statistics' on this day.
According to the corporation, Jamsil Station (an average of 156,117 passengers per day) had the most passengers among the 273 stations on Lines 1 to 8. A corporation official noted, "Jamsil Station attracted crowds thanks to the popularity of professional baseball, and the recently opened extension of Line 8 to Byeollae Station, which is a transfer point from Jamsil Station, has also contributed to the increase in passengers from Guri and Namyangju."
In second place was Hongdae Entrance Station on Line 2 (150,369 passengers), followed by Gangnam Station on Line 2 (149,757 passengers) in third place. Gangnam Station was the top subway station in passenger numbers for 26 years from 1997 to 2022. It dropped to second place in 2023, yielding the top spot to Jamsil Station, and in 2024, it fell to third place behind Hongdae Entrance Station.
Last year, the Seoul subway operated 1,604,999 times on Lines 1 to 8, covering a distance of 42,049.17 km. This is equivalent to circling the Earth's circumference (40,075 km) 1,049 times. The total number of passengers last year was 2.41752 billion, with an average of 6,605,250 passengers using the subway daily. The day with the highest number of passengers was Thursday, March 28, with 8.46 million people. This spike in numbers is attributed to the influx of visitors to spring flower festivals held throughout Seoul, including in Yeouido and Seokchon Lake.
