On the 28th, one day before the Lunar New Year holiday, heavy snow warnings were issued across most regions of the country, and accidents occurred overnight due to the snow.
According to the Korea Expressway Corporation, as of 6 a.m. that day, the Gyeongyu~Seodaejeon section of the Honam Expressway in Wanju-gun, North Jeolla Province, was completely blocked due to heavy snow. The expressway corporation urged drivers to use alternative routes such as Gyeongyu IC.
Earlier that day, around 3:11 a.m., a tanker truck slid on the snowy road and overturned at the Seungjip Bridge on the Dangjin–Daejeon Expressway in Yugu-eup, Gongju City, South Chungcheong Province. The driver of the tanker truck in his 50s was injured, and traffic was controlled in lanes 1 and 2 toward Daejeon.
As of 6:19 a.m. that day, the Yeongdong Line was addressing a single-vehicle accident in the first lane near the Hoengseong Rest Area toward Incheon. Additionally, a single-vehicle accident was being managed in the second lane and shoulder at the Gwangjiwon Tunnel on the Second Middle Expressway toward Icheon.
Accidents continued to occur in areas where significant snowfall fell the previous day. Around 7:32 p.m. on the 27th, nine commuter buses from two large companies slid on the snowy road in the Hwanseong-ri area of Jigok-myeon, Seosan City, South Chungcheong Province. As a result of the accident, one bus driver sustained serious injuries, and 47 passengers suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital.
The government raised the Central Disaster Management Headquarters to Level 2 at 10 p.m. on the 27th and elevated the crisis alert level from 'caution' to 'alert.'
