The basic subway fare applicable in the metropolitan area, including Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, and Incheon, will be increased by 150 won from the current 1,400 won to 1,550 won in the first half of this year.
According to the Seoul city government on the 21st, the three metropolitan governments in the area and Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) agreed in a meeting on the 2nd to raise the basic subway fare from 1,400 won to 1,550 won.
Earlier, on Aug. 12, 2023, the Seoul city government raised the city bus fare for the trunk and branch lines (based on cards) by 300 won (from 1,200 won to 1,500 won). From Oct. 7 of the same year, the basic subway fare was increased by 150 won (from 1,250 won to 1,400 won). At that time, the Seoul city government aimed to raise the subway fare by 300 won but only implemented an initial increase of 150 won, postponing the additional increase to 2024. However, due to the government's inflation stabilization policy, the actual increase did not occur.
A Seoul city official said, "We have agreed with Gyeonggi Province and Incheon City to raise the fare as soon as possible through necessary procedures in 2025," adding, "The timing for fare adjustments currently varies by agency, and a specific increase schedule has not yet been determined."
