A detention warrant for President Yoon Suk-yeol was issued on the 19th. After being arrested on the 15th, President Yoon has been at the Seoul Detention Center dressed formally, but he will now undergo official detention procedures and will change into a remand inmate uniform.
According to the legal community, President Yoon has remained in the suspect lounge at the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province after the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) executed the arrest warrant on the 15th.
President Yoon received the detention warrant early that morning, resulting in his status as a remand inmate. Consequently, he will undergo official detention procedures, expected to take place after 9 a.m. First, he will receive a prisoner number and undergo a detailed physical examination to verify his height and weight. Later, he is expected to change into a khaki-colored mixed fabric remand inmate uniform and take a mugshot.
Previously, when President Yoon was detained and entered the Seoul Detention Center, he was in a pre-detention status, so no separate physical examination or photography was conducted as per simplified admission procedures. In this case, he could retain the clothes he was wearing upon entry.
Once the admission procedures are completed, he is expected to be moved to the detention block and housed in a solitary cell of about 3 pyeong. However, since he must be accommodated in an available room within the detention center, there is a possibility that he may be housed in a room larger than 3 pyeong.
The room where President Yoon will stay is reported to have a locker, sink, TV, desk-dining table, utensils, and a toilet. There is no bed, and he will sleep on the floor with blankets. An electric panel is installed on the floor for warmth. He will shower in a communal shower room, and it is said that he will use it at times that do not coincide with other inmates. He is also allowed to exercise for up to one hour, but given his status as a sitting president, it is reported that his movements and times will be coordinated to avoid overlapping with those of other inmates.
The cell sizes in detention centers where past presidents have been imprisoned have been around 3 pyeong. Former President Park Geun-hye, who was detained in March 2017, lived in a solitary cell of about 3.04 pyeong (including a bathroom, 10.08㎡) that was converted from a common room shared by 6 to 7 ordinary inmates. Former President Lee Myung-bak was also housed in a solitary cell of 3.95 pyeong (including a bathroom, 13.07㎡) at the Eastern Seoul Detention Center after his arrest in March 2018.
Although President Yoon has been detained, he receives security from the Presidential Security Service due to his status as a sitting president. Similar to the current situation, external security is only provided by the security service based on the main gate of the internal wall (outer wall) of the detention center. When he needs to move outside the detention center for investigations, he will use a prisoner transport vehicle instead of a security service vehicle.
