A blizzard that hit Jeju on the 9th and heavy snowfall in other regions led to numerous flight cancellations at Jeju Airport.
According to Korea Airports Corporation, as of 8 p.m. on that day, out of a total of 395 scheduled flights, 155 domestic flights (75 departures and 80 arrivals) and 8 international flights (4 departures and 4 arrivals each) were canceled, totaling 163 flights.
Twenty-two domestic flights (9 departures and 13 arrivals) and 1 international arrival flight were also delayed. It was reported that 13 flights remained, and the cancellation status was under review. The number of passengers booked on canceled departure flights that day was said to be around 10,000.
Earlier, Jeju Airport announced that when 138 flight cancellations were decided at 5 p.m. that day, the number of passengers booked on canceled departure flights was tallied at 9,071 (8,788 domestic passengers and 283 international passengers).
In response, the airport corporation, Jeju Air, and Jeju Province formed a task force for affected travelers. They have deployed security personnel at the airport for those who are staying and are providing mattresses, blankets, bottled water, etc., while extending the hours of heat and facilities.
They also provided accommodation information for nearby lodging establishments while extending public transportation operating hours. Measures were also prepared to deploy charter buses if necessary.
