The Korea meteorological Administration forecast on the 6th that a 'snow bomb' will fall in most parts of the country from the 7th to the 9th. Up to 40 cm of snow is expected to accumulate in North Jeolla Province. A cold wave warning has been issued for Seoul, making it the coldest winter so far.
According to the Korea meteorological Administration, a cut-off low pressure system containing Arctic air is rotating counterclockwise northwest of the Korean Peninsula. The cold wind passing over the warm West Sea will form a cloud band. The cloud band will be blocked by the Noryeong Mountains, staying for a long time and bringing heavy snow centered on North Jeolla Province.
Once the snow starts, it may fall at a rate of about 3 to 5 cm per hour, reaching heavy snow warning levels in a short time, so caution is advised, according to the Korea meteorological Administration. Heavy snow advisories and warnings are issued when the newly accumulated snow over 24 hours is expected to be 5 cm and 20 cm (30 cm in mountain areas), respectively.
Up to 40 cm of snow will accumulate in North Jeolla Province over three days (7th to 9th). The expected snowfall for two days (7th to 8th) is 10 to 30 cm on Ulleungdo and Dokdo, 5 to 15 cm (up to 20 cm in some areas) in North Jeolla Province, 3 to 10 cm (up to 5 cm) in South Chungcheong Province, Gwangju, and South Jeolla Province, 5 to 10 cm (up to 15 cm) in the mountainous areas of Jeju, 1 to 5 cm in Daejeon, Sejong, central and southern Chungcheong Province, western inland of South Gyeongsang Province, and mid-mountain areas of Jeju, and 1 cm in the southwest of Gyeonggi Province, the West Sea's five islands, Daegu, and the inland of North Gyeongsang Province.
The morning low temperatures will drop to minus 13 degrees Celsius to zero on the 7th, minus 13 degrees to 2 degrees on the 8th, and minus 18 degrees to 3 degrees on the 9th. The daytime high temperatures are expected to be minus 1 degree to 7 degrees on the 7th, minus 4 degrees to 7 degrees on the 8th, and minus 9 degrees to 3 degrees on the 9th.
