The government announced on the 5th that it plans to extend joint memorials in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do and prepare for the second joint memorial service in relation to the Jeju Air disaster.
Lee Hankyung, deputy minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's Disaster and Safety Management Headquarters, said during the '10th Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters meeting on the Jeju Air passenger incident' held that day, 'Today, the eighth day since the accident, 146 victims have been handed over back to their families, and the funeral proceedings are underway while respecting the wishes of the bereaved families,' adding, 'Even after the funerals, we will continue to look after the families and provide necessary support.'
Additionally, efforts are being made to provide meticulous and ample support centered around the National Trauma Center, including psychological support, legal consultations involving inheritance and compensation, and emergency care for families. Documents have been simplified to ease submissions for families, and dedicated public officials will assist with the issuance of necessary documentation from the time of the funeral onward.
Measures to block malicious comments damaging the honor of victims and families have also been initiated. The Korean National Police Agency's special investigation team has commenced pre-investigation and investigation into a total of 99 cases. The previous day, a suspect who posted defamatory messages aimed at bereaved families was apprehended.
The Korean National Police Agency plans to receive complaints and reports urging punishment for malicious content sequentially. A field reporting center has been set up and is operational on the second floor of Muan Airport, reflecting the opinions of the families.
The Ministry of Justice is providing free legal advice by dispatching professionals, including the Korea Legal Aid Corporation, to the Muan Airport Integrated Support Center. Plans are in place to continue consultations through visits, calls, and business trips in the future.
Deputy Minister Lee expressed deep gratitude to those sharing and comforting the suffering of families, as well as officials, the National Forensic Service, police, firefighters, military personnel, and others involved in managing the accident in cold weather. 'The government will do its utmost in managing the accident, supporting families, and investigating the cause,' Lee mentioned.
