Among the 179 victims of the Jeju Air disaster, the bodies of 103 have been returned to their families.
On the 4th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety noted that as of 5 p.m., the bodies of 103 victims had been handed over to their bereaved families, with the majority of the corpses recovered. The remaining 76 bodies are currently preserved at the temporary mortuary in Muan Airport and are scheduled to be delivered sequentially by the end of the day.
As of the night search on the 3rd, a total of 1,013 body parts of the victims had been recovered. The completion of body recovery indicates that the reconstruction process, which aligns bodily parts for each victim, has been finalized.
Considering that one additional body part was found at the scene that day, the bereaved families are discussing the plan to gather any further discovered remains for a joint funeral, followed by setting up separate memorial spaces like memorial towers for their enshrinement.
As all the victims of the Jeju Air disaster are returned to their families, Gwangju City and South Jeolla Province have begun supporting funeral arrangements, including securing funeral halls and crematories.
Currently, there are 23 funeral homes available in Gwangju and 123 in South Jeolla where bodies can be accommodated. In Gwangju, 92 mortuary rooms are available, including 10 at Green Funeral Hall, 7 at Korea Hospital, 6 at Veterans Hospital, and 6 at Christian Hospital. Additionally, there are 37 available funeral parlors at these funeral homes. In South Jeolla, funeral homes are prepared in Mokpo (19 locations), Yeosu (9 locations), and Suncheon (6 locations).
In preparation for any shortage of funeral facilities, additional funeral homes have also been secured in nearby North Jeolla. The city and province plan to support all funeral procedures, from transporting the deceased to funerals, funeral services, and cremation.
Preparations for funerals include extending the operating hours of Yeongnak Park Crematorium in Gwangju from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Furthermore, five crematoriums in areas like Mokpo and Suncheon in South Jeolla are planned to operate 24 hours.
