Fire authorities estimated that most of the passengers were likely killed in a Jeju Air passenger jet accident that occurred on the morning of the 29th at Muan Airport, South Jeolla Province.
The South Jeolla Fire Department held an on-site briefing for the families of passengers at Muan Airport Terminal on the 29th, stating that among the 181 total passengers, except for the 2 who were rescued, most are presumed dead.
An official from the South Jeolla Fire Department noted, "After the collision with the wall, passengers were thrown outside the aircraft. There is almost no chance of survival." The official added, "The fuselage is almost completely destroyed, and it is difficult to identify the deceased," explaining that the process of identifying and collecting remains is taking time.
Jeju Air flight 7C2216, which departed from Bangkok, Thailand, collided with the runway wall while landing at Muan Airport around 9:05 a.m. on this day. A total of 181 people were on board, including 175 passengers and 6 crew members, but only 2 crew members were rescued.
As of 12:41 p.m. on this day, the fire authorities confirmed 85 deaths.
