The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 29th that Jeonnam Muan County has been declared a special disaster area in connection with the Jeju Air passenger plane accident at Muan International Airport in Jeonnam.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety explained, "Acting President Choi Sang-mok declared Jeonnam Muan County a special disaster area," noting, "This is a measure for rapid government-level recovery and support for victims following the large-scale human casualties caused by the aircraft runway excursion accident around 9:03 a.m. that day."
This declaration of a special disaster area marks the 13th case as a social disaster. When a special disaster area is declared, measures such as support for victims under relevant laws are taken at the inter-ministerial level. Recovery and support will be handled by local governments that oversee the resident registration addresses of disaster victims, in addition to Muan County.
Specific support measures following the special disaster area declaration will be prepared through meetings of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters.
Acting President Choi said, "We will do our utmost to support the families of the victims affected by this accident," emphasizing, "All efforts will be made at the government level to recover from the accident and manage the situation."
