The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced the results of the "2024 elevator maintenance status sample inspection" on the 27th.

According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, of the 30 companies inspected, a total of 48 violations were detected, including failure to conduct self-inspections and falsified inspection results in 16 companies.

The companies caught this time are subject to administrative action. The management entities will face fines of 500,000 to 1 million won, and maintenance companies will face business suspension from 15 to 30 days.

Since last year, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, in collaboration with local governments and the Korea Elevator Safety Corporation, has been conducting unannounced sample inspections. Companies selected through lowest bid, shortest inspection time, and public interest reports are examined for self-inspection implementation and failure to report elevator accidents.

Kim Yong-gyun, director of the Safety Prevention Policy Office of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, noted, "Elevators are facilities closely tied to daily life, used by the entire nation, and ensuring user safety is of utmost importance," adding, "We will work on eradicating maintenance neglect and improve elevator maintenance quality by eliminating unreasonable regulations."
