A fire broke out at 7:43 p.m. on the 20th at the SK Energy Ulsan plant's fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit within the Ulsan Nam-gu petrochemical complex.
The fire department, which received the report, deployed 30 units of equipment, including fire trucks, and extinguished the fire in about two hours. There were no casualties.
The fire occurred in a pipe within the heavy oil catalytic cracking process at the plant. To prevent further damage, firefighters shut off the valve leading to the pipe and carried out firefighting operations.
Even after full suppression, stabilization efforts are ongoing, with water being sprayed on the pipe to prevent secondary accidents. The fire department plans to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the damage once the pipe temperature has sufficiently dropped.
