The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 18th that the number of mobile ID card issuances has surpassed 4 million. This comes two years after the issuance of mobile ID cards began in July 2022.
According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, most of the currently issued mobile ID cards are driver's licenses. Additionally, veterans' registration cards and foreign residents' identification cards can also be issued via mobile.
The government is expecting the number of mobile ID card holders to increase as resident registration cards will also be issuable via mobile starting in February next year.
Mobile ID cards can be used for identity verification or submitting identity information at public institutions, financial institutions, airports, restaurants, convenience stores, and more. The authenticity of the ID card is verified through dynamic images of the taegeuk symbol and hologram displays.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety plans to guide small business owners on how to distinguish fake ID cards, in preparation for cases where some youths may forge or misuse mobile ID cards after the college entrance exam.
Yong-seok Lee, head of the digital government innovation office at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, said, "We will continue to expand linked services to ensure that the public can conveniently use many services through mobile ID cards."
