Onconic Therapeutics(476060) said on the 31st that it received a manufacturing patent in the United States for Nesuparib, which is being developed as an anticancer drug. Nesuparib is in clinical trials to allow prescriptions for patients with pancreatic, ovarian, endometrial, and stomach cancers.
The substance patent for Nesuparib expires in 2036. The company separately secured a patent for a new crystal form of Nesuparib and its manufacturing method. The patent term is May 2042. The company said this will allow Nesuparib to be protected in the U.S. pharmaceutical market until then.
Nesuparib is an anticancer candidate that dually inhibits Tankyrase and PARP. Tankyrase is involved in cancer cell growth, and PARP is an enzyme used when cancer cells repair DNA damage. The mechanism blocks these enzyme activities to stop cancer cell growth and induce apoptosis.
The company plans to submit an investigational new drug (IND) application for a phase 2 trial of Nesuparib in the United States by the end of this year. A company official said, "We expanded the scope of patent protection while conducting clinical trials of Nesuparib," and added, "We will lay the groundwork for approval and commercialization."
