Daewoong Pharmaceutical(069620) said on the 25th that it is speeding up halal (products that Muslims can eat and use) certification in Indonesia. Indonesia is the world's fourth-most populous country and is considered an export hub.
In Indonesia, prescription drugs must obtain mandatory halal (products that Muslims can eat and use) certification by Oct. 2034. Daewoong Pharmaceutical is building a Smart Factory in Cikarang, Indonesia, to meet the requirement.
The Smart Factory was designed with halal certification in mind from the establishment stage. The goal is to obtain GMP (good manufacturing practice) approval in July next year and produce solid dosage forms such as capsules and tablets. Daewoong Pharmaceutical said it is pursuing halal certification not only for pharmaceuticals but also for cosmetics and health functional foods.
Daewoong Pharmaceutical is also taking part in the government-private joint task force supporting entry into Indonesia by Korea's government. Lee So-yoon, head of the regulatory and patent center at Daewoong Pharmaceutical, said, "We will raise the profile of K-pharmaceuticals and bio in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)."
