Samsung Electronics(005930) the medical device division and Samsung Medison Co. are expanding their medical device business into the treatment field.
After partnering earlier this year with HistoSonics, a noninvasive ultrasound-based cancer treatment company, this time it is joining hands with Accuray, a U.S. radiosurgery specialist, to develop precision imaging-based treatment solutions.
Samsung HME (Health & Medical Equipment) America and Accuray signed a non-binding letter of intent (Non-binding LOI), they said on the 5th.
The two companies plan to review the feasibility of developing a volumetric imaging-based precision radiation therapy solution by linking Samsung's mobile CT "BodyTom" and Accuray's robotic radiosurgery platform "CyberKnife."
The core of this collaboration is combining Samsung's high-definition 3D imaging technology with Accuray's image-guided robotic treatment technology. The goal is to more accurately identify patients' anatomical changes and treatment targets during therapy to improve the precision of radiation dose delivery and support patient-specific treatment.
The two companies plan to pursue sophisticated treatment planning using real-time high-resolution images and to advance dose delivery technology. They are also discussing introducing the related technology direction and vision at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) annual meeting in September.
Yoo Gyu-tae, head of the medical device division at Samsung Electronics and also CEO of Samsung Medison Co., said, "This collaboration is part of a key strategy to expand next-generation medical imaging technology from precision diagnosis to precision treatment," adding, "By combining Samsung's imaging technology with Accuray's radiosurgery expertise, we will implement a high-precision, personalized treatment solution that reflects each patient's condition and changes at the time of treatment."
Samsung has recently been strengthening its collaborations with treatment-focused corporations in succession. On Apr. 4, it expanded its partnership with HistoSonics in the United States, pushing to build an image-guided treatment environment that combines ultrasound diagnostic technology with noninvasive cancer treatment technology.
By linking Samsung Medison Co.'s premium ultrasound diagnostic device "R20" with HistoSonics' histotripsy treatment system "Edison," the companies are seeking to advance real-time image-based treatment technology.
Samsung Electronics and Samsung Medison Co. plan to strengthen their push into the precision image-guided treatment market by expanding collaborations with global treatment-specialist corporations based on their competitiveness in imaging diagnostics technology.
