Korea AeroSpace Administration and NASA have begun talks on cooperation for building and operating a lunar base.
Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) said it held the "KASA-NASA Artemis workshop" in Seoul on the 30th and discussed technology areas where Korea can participate in NASA's lunar base construction and ways to cooperate.
Carlos Garcia-Galan, NASA's lunar base program manager, attended the workshop. The two agencies also signed a joint letter of intent stating that Korea's technological capabilities will be used in the process of building a sustainably operated lunar base.
However, the specific areas Korea will take on, technical specifications, and the scope of the project have not been decided. The two sides plan to finalize detailed cooperation through follow-up talks.
Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) and NASA released a joint statement in September 2024 outlining the direction of space cooperation, followed by the Artemis research agreement in October of the same year to establish a foundation for joint research. The workshop is a follow-up discussion to expand existing research cooperation into the field of lunar base construction.
Oh Tae-seok, head of Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA), said, "We will flesh out ways to participate in NASA's lunar base construction plan based on the technology accumulated domestically."
