"The biggest problem in Germany's economy right now is that there are not enough people to work. People have to come from overseas. I think the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) Europe Research Center is a 'signal' showing that foreigners are welcomed in Saarbrücken and can put down roots there."
On the 17th (local time) at Saarbrücken City Hall, Barbara Meyer, deputy mayor of Saarbrücken, emphasized the importance of international research institutions in solving Germany's labor shortage immediately after the ceremony marking the 30th anniversary of the KIST Europe Research Center. She said the very existence of the KIST Europe Research Center sends a powerful message.
Established in 1996 in Saarbrücken, Saarland, Germany, the KIST Europe Research Center is Korea's first and the only overseas research cooperation hub in Europe. With support from the German government and Saarland, it has built a research base and steadily expanded international joint research.
Deputy Mayor Meyer explains that the KIST Europe Research Center, which builds a bridge between Korea and Europe, is an excellent example of 'multilateralism.' Meyer said, "Humanity faces global challenges that cannot be solved alone," and "we must create joint solutions through international scientific cooperation."
She added, "The KIST Europe Research Center is particularly recognized for research in environmental safety and health," and said it "contributes to a cleaner environment, safer technology, and healthier lives."
There are expectations that international research institutions like the KIST Europe Research Center will attract overseas talent to Saarbrücken. Saarbrücken also recently opened a 'welcome center' to help people immigrating from abroad adapt easily to society.
Deputy Mayor Meyer emphasized the role of cities in sustainable development. She explained that cities supply people with energy and water, provide transportation and various services, and are places that can deliver real change.
In her congratulatory remarks, Deputy Mayor Meyer said, "Saarbrücken is strengthening its status as a major research hub in southwestern Germany," and added, "Saarbrücken will continue to be a strong supporter, partner, and friend of the KIST Europe Research Center."
