In the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, prescribing strategies that consider nocturia and cardiovascular safety were presented as a key topic.
JW Pharmaceutical and JW Shinyak said on the 10th that they held the J STAR Symposium for two days from on the 30th at Grand Walkerhill Seoul in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, under the theme of clinical applications of the benign prostatic hyperplasia treatment Truepass (ingredient silodosin).
Truepass is an alpha blocker class treatment that selectively blocks α1A receptors distributed in the prostate and bladder neck to improve lower urinary tract symptoms. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a condition in which an enlarged prostate compresses the urethra, causing frequent urination, nocturia, and a feeling of incomplete emptying.
On the first day of the symposium, Yoo Sang-jun, a professor of urology at Seoul National University Boramae Medical Center, gave a presentation on the need for early symptom improvement and long-term management of voiding function in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Professor Yoo said, "There are differences in clinical efficacy and safety among alpha blockers in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia," and "silodosin can be used not only to improve bladder outlet obstruction but also to alleviate nocturia and overactive bladder symptoms."
Next, Bae Sang-rak, a professor of urology at Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital of the Catholic University, presented clinical data on silodosin in terms of managing nocturia and sleep disorders.
Professor Bae explained, "Nocturia is a symptom that directly affects patients' sleep quality and quality of life," adding, "Phase 3 trials in Europe confirmed improvement in urinary symptoms and a reduction in nocturia among patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, and improvements in residual urine–related indices have also been reported."
On the second day, Park Sang-min, a professor of cardiology at Nowon Eulji Medical Center, gave a presentation on cardiovascular risk factors to consider when treating patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia accompanied by hypertension.
Professor Park said, "When prescribing alpha blockers, dizziness and fall risk due to orthostatic hypotension should be considered," adding, "silodosin is known to have a relatively small effect on blood pressure based on its high α1A receptor selectivity."
JW Pharmaceutical and JW Shinyak said the symposium shared key clinical evidence on Truepass and case studies of its use in actual clinical practice.
