Samsung Bioepis said on the 31st that it launched the low-dose formulation (40 mg/mL) of the ophthalmic disease treatment Opuviz (ingredient Aflibercept) in the European market.
Opuviz is a biosimilar of Eylea, a blockbuster ophthalmic disease treatment developed by U.S. drugmaker Regeneron. It is used to treat ophthalmic diseases such as wet age-related macular degeneration and works by inhibiting vascular endothelial growth factor.
Eylea is a blockbuster drug that records about 12 trillion won in annual sales worldwide. Samsung Bioepis expects to strengthen its competitiveness in the high-growth ophthalmic biosimilar market through this European launch.
In particular, Samsung Bioepis diversified its ophthalmic disease portfolio in Europe by rolling out Opuviz after launching the macular degeneration treatment Bioviz (ingredient ranibizumab) in Europe on Jan.
With this launch, Samsung Bioepis' directly sold products in Europe increased to a total of five. The company has built a direct sales system in Europe since 2023, starting with Episcli (ingredient eculizumab), a biosimilar of the rare disease treatment Soliris.
Meanwhile, in the domestic market, Samsung Bioepis sells the Eylea biosimilar under the product name Aphilibu.
