Kim Sung-gyun, professor of prosthodontics, was appointed the eighth director of Seoul Nat'I University Dental Hospital (SNUDH).
The director of Seoul Nat'I University Dental Hospital (SNUDH) is appointed by the president upon recommendation by the hospital's board of directors and nomination by the Minister of the Ministry of Education. The term is three years starting May 15. One consecutive term is allowed.
Kim, the new director, graduated from the Seoul National University School of Dentistry in 1993 and has served as a professor at the Seoul National University School of Dentistry since 2005. Kim has served as head of planning and head of public relations at Seoul National University Dental Hospital, head of the construction preparation task force for Gwanak Seoul Nat'I University Dental Hospital, and head of the future development task force, and previously served as the inaugural director of Gwanak Seoul Nat'I University Dental Hospital and director of the Seoul City Dental Hospital for the Disabled.
In academia, Kim is regarded as an expert in 3D printing, big data–bio convergence, and artificial intelligence (AI)-based dental research. Kim has published about 100 SCI-level papers and has served as president of the Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Implantology and president of the Asian Academy of Prosthodontics.
In health policy, Kim has also served as deputy director of the Dental Policy Institute of the Korean Dental Association and as a member of the expert committee for the dental field at the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service (HIRA), participating as an adviser in the policy to expand coverage for implants and dentures for older adults. In 2019, Kim received a presidential commendation for contributions to improving public oral health.
Kim, the new director, said plans call for strengthening the role of the national central dental hospital and leading global dentistry through AI innovation at Seoul Nat'I University Dental Hospital (SNUDH).
