Samsung Biologics said on the 8th that it completed third-party verification by a global certification body for its product carbon footprint (PCF) system.
The company held a ceremony on the 6th at its headquarters in Songdo International City, Incheon, to receive the third-party verification certificate for the PCF system. The verification was conducted by DNV (Det Norske Veritas) of Norway.
PCF is an index that calculates greenhouse gas emissions across the entire lifecycle of a product, from production to disposal. Samsung Biologics carried out the verification for the biopharmaceutical manufacturing process at its first Bio Campus.
The verification found that Samsung Biologics' PCF system accurately calculates greenhouse gas emissions across all stages of drug production. It also met the requirements of the international standard ISO 14067 and the British Standards Institution (BSI) carbon footprint standard PAS 2050.
Recently, global pharmaceutical companies have been using PCF as a key metric for implementing carbon neutrality and are tightening related criteria at the contract stage. Samsung Biologics plans to use this verification as a starting point to expand the verified business sites in phases.
John Rim, CEO of Samsung Biologics, said, "We have earned recognition for an environmental management system that meets global customers' ESG requirements," and added, "We will continue to work toward achieving our carbon neutrality goals."
Meanwhile, Samsung Biologics declared "2050 net-zero" in 2022 and joined RE100, and serves as chair for the supply chain track at the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) led by the British royal family. In 2022 and 2025, it issued an open letter with global pharmaceutical companies urging action on climate change across the entire supply chain.
