The College of Engineering at Seoul National University said on Feb. 5 that it signed an industry-academia cooperation agreement on Feb. 2 with K-PAI, an artificial intelligence (AI) forum in Silicon Valley, to conduct advanced AI research and education and foster talent.

Using this agreement as a starting point, the two organizations will jointly pursue collaboration on advanced AI research and education, the discovery and recruitment of faculty talent, career development for next-generation researchers, and discussions linking AI, industry, and regulation. The collaboration on advanced AI research and education will cover technological innovation, responsible AI development, and privacy-protecting technologies.

In particular, through the agreement, the College of Engineering plans to expand opportunities for top-tier engineering talent in Korea to advance to and exchange with the United States, and to actively seek to attract top overseas researchers in the Americas with support from K-PAI. K-PAI also plans to share with the college's researchers the knowledge and insights it has accumulated by experiencing, earlier than anyone else, the innovative changes in Silicon Valley backed by massive capital.

Kim Young-oh, dean of the College of Engineering at Seoul National University, said, "This agreement is significant in that it provides members of Seoul National University with opportunities for advanced AI research and startup training in Silicon Valley, and broadens the path for outstanding overseas AI researchers to enter the domestic academic community through faculty appointments," adding, "We plan to continue working with K-PAI to build a talent circulation system connected to the global research environment."

Yoon Sung-hee, head of K-PAI, said, "Despite a short history of just over a year, K-PAI has established itself as a leading AI forum in Silicon Valley, and it is very meaningful that we are now collaborating across borders with the College of Engineering at Seoul National University, which has Korea's top-tier talent," adding, "Starting with this agreement, we will work even harder with the college to cultivate the next generation of AI talent and strengthen the Korea-U.S. technology ecosystem."
