Bio-pharmaceutical company Medytox said on the 9th that a local broker in Thailand who distributed counterfeits of its botulinum toxin product "Meditoxin (export name Neuronox)" and its hyaluronic acid filler "Neuramis," which hold an overwhelming market share in the country, was caught and given a finalized prison sentence and fine.
Medytox entered the Thai market in the mid-2010s. As "Neuronox" and "Neuramis" gained strong popularity and market share surged, counterfeits appeared locally.
In response, in 2019 the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) in Thailand cracked down on counterfeit botulinum toxin products and fillers, and Medytox, together with its local joint venture Mediselles, filed lawsuits against illegal distributors and brokers.
The Supreme Court of Thailand on the 27th of last month finalized lower court rulings sentencing three Thai brokers, indicted on charges including illegal distribution and trademark infringement, to prison terms ranging from 3 years 7 months 10 days to 2 years 7 months 10 days. Separately, it imposed fines on the illegal counterfeit distribution company.
A Medytox official said, "This is a case that exploited the recognition of Medytox products, which have established themselves as premium brands locally," adding, "Only genuine products are distributed in Korea." The official added, "Overseas as well, you should verify that the product is genuine, with an official hologram sticker and serial number attached and a controlled distribution process."
