SILK Longevity held an opening ceremony for its corporate research institute on the 18th at the Sejong Industry-University-Research Cluster Support Center and began full-fledged artificial intelligence (AI)-based healthcare research. The ceremony was attended by Choi Min-ho, mayor of Sejong Special Self-Governing City, and key figures from the domestic and international life sciences community.
The event was held in conjunction with the international symposium "1M Phenome Initiative" at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) Munji Campus. Participants discussed the future of Precision Medicine using AI and multi-omics (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and other biological information) technologies.
Attendees included Leroy Hood, a founder of systems biology who proposed the concept of "P4 medicine (Predictive, Preventive, Personalized, Participatory Medicine)" and a professor at the Institute for Systems Biology in the United States; Mathias Uhlén, a professor at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden; Adil Mardinoglu, a professor at King's College London in the United Kingdom; Lee Sang-yeop, vice president for research at KAIST; Park Hyun-young, director of the Korea National Institute of Health; Song Min-ho, a KAIST professor; and Han Jin, a professor at Inje University.
Song Min-ho, a co-CEO of SILK Longevity and a professor, said, "P4 healthcare is the process of redefining the flow of medicine through data, and this research institute will be the place to realize that vision." Adil Mardinoglu, the other co-CEO and a professor, emphasized international cooperation, saying, "SILK Longevity will grow into a new global model where researchers and industry around the world collaborate."
SILK Longevity plans to work with research institutions at home and abroad to build an AI Precision Medicine ecosystem. Song Min-ho said, "The future we envision is a world where we prevent disease before it occurs and treat it tailored to each person's data," adding, "It is meaningful to take the first step in Sejong."
