The Nuclear Safety And Security Commission said it confirmed there were no issues with the safety of any domestic reactor facilities in connection with the magnitude 3.1 earthquake that occurred on the morning of the 8th in an area 17 kilometers east of Okcheon County, North Chungcheong Province.
The facility closest to the epicenter is Hana-ro, a research reactor in Yuseong District, Daejeon, 39 kilometers away, and the measured ground acceleration at that location was confirmed at 0.0119g. This is lower than the seismic design value of 0.2g, a level that has no impact on the facility. An emergency on-site inspection also found no irregularities.
Hana-ro shut down the reactor on Aug. 25 for a scheduled inspection.
However, the Nuclear Safety And Security Commission said that even though this measured value exceeded Hana-ro's earthquake alarm threshold of 0.0067g, the alarm did not sound, and it plans to dispatch experts from the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS) to investigate the cause.
For nuclear power plants, the nearest Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant recorded a measured ground acceleration of 0.0043g, below the seismic design value.
