The National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) said on the 1st that it appointed Lee Geung-won, a professor in the School of Semiconductor Physics at the College of Science and Technology at Korea University, as head of the Division of Natural Sciences at the Basic Research Directorate. The term is two years.
Director General Lee graduated from the Department of Physics at Seoul National University in 1985 and received a doctorate in physics from Texas A&M University in the United States in 1994. In the same year, he joined the School of Semiconductor Physics at Korea University as a professor and has remained there to the present. He also served as an adjunct researcher at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), managing director of the Korean Physical Society, Commissioner of the National Science and Technology Council's Committee on Large-scale Public R&D, and expert member of the Basic Research Committee of the Science and Technology Advisory Council.
Director General Lee is responsible for tasks including evaluation and management of support programs under the Division of Natural Sciences entrusted by the government; project planning; proposing and advising on mid- to long-term development plans and policy formulation; establishing budget allocation plans; progress checks and promotion of outcome utilization; forecasting research needs and technologies; surveys and analysis of research trends; and external cooperation.
