Perseid meteor shower illuminates sky with exploding meteor and Milky Way

This is a scene captured in the Austrian sky during the 2015 Perseid meteor shower. A meteor is exploding and emitting light, with the central band of the Milky Way visible beside it. The meteor shower is a phenomenon where small particles made of ice and rock enter the Earth's atmosphere, evaporating and shining. The Perseid meteor shower occurs when Earth passes through the orbit of Comet Swift-Tuttle each year. About a week later, the Perseid meteor shower is expected to peak, with conditions allowing for one meteor to be seen approximately every minute in dark, clear skies.
