Portable X-ray devices can now be used outside of medical institutions. The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on the 17th that it will implement a revised rule regarding the safety management of diagnostic radiation generating devices starting from the 18th.
Diagnostic radiation generating devices like X-rays had to be used only inside medical institutions to prevent radiation hazards. To use them outside of medical institutions, they had to be mounted in mobile inspection vehicles. However, it was suggested that related regulations should be relaxed so that quick examinations can be performed when X-ray imaging is needed in emergencies or disaster situations, or in areas with poor access to medical care.
With this revision, portable X-ray devices weighing 10 kg or less can be used outside of hospitals without being mounted in mobile inspection vehicles. However, to prevent radiation hazards, access control lines must be established around the device. It must be ensured that radiation does not expose the general public by using lead screens.
Kim Guk-il, Director of Health Policy at the Ministry of Health and Welfare, noted, "I expect that portable X-rays will be actively used in areas with poor access to medical care to quickly diagnose and treat patients."
