The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity (KOSAC) announced on the 16th that all members of the Korean delegation won medals at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad.
A total of 354 students from 92 countries participated in the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad. The Korean delegation's Kim Hyo-jong (Seoul Science High School, grade 3) won a gold medal, while Sim Yu-chan (Seoul Science High School, grade 3), Lee Ye-jun (Daegu Science High School, grade 3), and Choi Ye-jun (Seoul Science High School, grade 3) won silver medals. Individually, Kim Hyo-jong ranked 21st, Choi Ye-jun ranked 41st, Sim Yu-chan ranked 42nd, and Lee Ye-jun ranked 64th.
China achieved individual rankings of 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 12th. Vietnam and Taiwan also had several students in the top rankings.
The International Chemistry Olympiad is divided into a theoretical exam of 5 hours and a practical exam of 5 hours. The theoretical exam consisted of 9 problems across the fields of physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, and inorganic chemistry. The practical exam presented a total of 3 tasks.
Following the International Chemistry Olympiad, the Korean delegation is set to participate in international science olympiads in mathematics, physics, and biology.
