Boryung is ramping up efforts to strengthen its ESG (environmental, social, governance) management for sustainable management. Recently, Boryung published the 'Sustainable Management Report 2025,' which contains its mid-to-long-term strategy and the results of ESG management activities.
This sustainable management report reflects the ESG management activities and achievements that Boryung carried out last year. Boryung has been publishing reports annually since 2022 to disclose its ESG management performance and communicate with stakeholders.
Boryung established a '2050 Carbon Neutral Roadmap' last year to enhance its environmental management. The company plans to build a low-carbon production and operation system with the goal of achieving net-zero by 2050. It has been voluntarily conducting 'greenhouse gas inventory third-party verification' every year for its pharmaceutical production sites located in Ansan and Yesan, as well as its headquarters, to manage greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition to greenhouse gas emissions, Boryung has prepared a 10-year management plan for six major environmental indicators, such as energy consumption and water pollutant emissions. Based on this, the company plans to realize its greenhouse gas reduction goals through medium- to long-term investments in environmental facilities. Additionally, the Yesan plant has achieved recognition as an 'outstanding business site under the voluntary energy efficiency target system' by the Korea Energy Agency.
In the area of social contributions, the 'Humans In Space Youth (HIS Youth)' program is Boryung's flagship project for youth space competitions. The HIS Youth program offered selected students from research proposal competitions for middle and high school students, as well as a children's themed art contest, an opportunity to visit the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the U.S. space corporation Axiom Space. Boryung explained that it created an opportunity to instill dreams and a spirit of challenge about space in future generations.
The company is also actively engaged in biodiversity conservation efforts. Since last year, Boryung has entered into a business agreement with Yesan County, where its pharmaceutical production facilities are located, to conduct various activities for the conservation of the natural monument, the white stork. The company has supported habitat improvement projects for the white stork, in which employees participated, and the installation of nesting towers to aid in safe breeding, conducting biodiversity protection activities together with the local community.
Boryung also held a 'supply chain growth discussion' to jointly respond to ESG concerns with its partners. The company provided training on its green purchasing guidelines, global ESG trends, and climate change response strategies to its partners to enhance their understanding of the implementation direction and role of ESG management. Additionally, various sustainable management activities, such as a salary donation campaign, paper cup zero campaign, and waste pharmaceutical collection campaign, are being promoted with employee participation. Thanks to these efforts, Boryung received its first comprehensive grade of A in the ESG assessment conducted by the Korea ESG Standards Institute in 2024.
A Boryung official said, 'Since last year, we have revised board regulations to report ESG management performance and plans once a year to the board of directors, and we have established a responsibility management system where the board directly inspects the status of ESG initiatives and resolves important matters.'
