The Institute for Basic Science (IBS), the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering, the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB), the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, and the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) received an 'excellent' rating in the evaluation of research institutions in the field of science and technology.
On the 26th, the Ministry of Science and ICT held the 73rd meeting of the Presidential Advisory Council on Science & Technology and reviewed and decided on the results (draft) of the national research and development performance evaluation for the first half of 2025 and the plan (draft) for enhancing the efficiency of large accelerators.
During the meeting, the interim evaluation results of national research and development projects, specific evaluation results, and the evaluation results of science and technology research institutes were disclosed. The interim evaluation of national research and development projects is a system in which the relevant ministry conducts a self-evaluation for projects whose evaluation period has arrived according to the strategic plan, while the Science and Technology Innovation Headquarters performs an upper review of the excellence of the results and the appropriateness of the promotion process. This year, 212 projects across 22 ministries were subject to evaluation.
As a result of the interim evaluation, 40 projects (18.9%) were rated excellent, 126 projects (59.4%) were rated fair, and 46 projects (21.7%) were rated inadequate.
The evaluation of government-funded research institutes in the field of science and technology is a system that checks the achievement of goals and the excellence of results based on the plans established according to the roles and responsibilities of the research institutes. This evaluation was conducted for 11 institutions whose mid-to-long-term evaluation cycle has arrived.
The results revealed 5 excellent, 5 fair, and 1 inadequate institution. The excellent institutions were the Institute for Basic Science, the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering, the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB), the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, and the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM). The fair institutions were UNIST, the Korea Brain Research Institute, the National Green Technology Center, the Korea Basic Science Institute, and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The inadequate rating was given to the Graduate School of Science and Technology.
The operating committee also approved the plan to enhance the efficiency of large accelerator utilization. Based on demand surveys, they decided to identify key scientific and technological fields directly connected to leading basic research and strengthening the competitiveness of strategic technologies, prioritizing the allocation of new beam time. They also aimed to establish a real-time experimental-analysis integrated platform system to enable real-time data analysis and experimental adjustments to transition to an 'AI-based data utilization system.'
