Virtual idol content created with domestic artificial intelligence (AI) technology will be showcased at a domestic film festival. It is a music video featuring a 3D virtual idol singing.
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) noted on the 23rd that it will hold a special session to unveil the music video of the world's first virtual idol "IITERNITI" applying stereoscopic media technology at the 42nd Busan International Short Film Festival, which will be held from the 24th to the 29th.
The institute collaborated with domestic content production company Pulse Nine to create an 11-member virtual idol content. IITERNITI also serves as the official promotional ambassador for this film festival.
The music video "WEN MOON" being presented at this film festival is a work that converts content originally produced as 2D video into high-quality 3D stereoscopic video using AI-based 3D conversion technology developed jointly by ETRI and DM Studio. This technology allows for the conversion of regular 2D video content into 3D without separate 3D filming. In particular, unlike existing 3D video production methods, it minimizes discomfort caused by motion sickness during viewing.
ETRI has also developed a compatible transmission technology that allows streaming UHD 2D and 3D content as a single video file. This technology has been adopted as the core technology for the 3D service of the next-generation broadcasting international standard ATSC 3.0 by the U.S. Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC).
Kim Sung-hoon, head of the ETRI Busan Joint Research Laboratory, said, "This technology will be a game changer that helps local video and film production companies create competitive immersive content in the global market with existing filming methods, not just beyond the implementation of stereoscopic video."
ETRI researchers plan to develop generative AI-based automatic content generation technology and stereoscopic content technology capable of 4DX tactile experiences as follow-up research.
For reference, the 3D content can also be viewed on ETRI's AI stereoscopic media online streaming service platform (https://etri-ott-en.dev.loomex.net) or the IITERNITI YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@iiterniti).
