Hallym University Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital announced that Professor Kim Min-seung of the Department of Neurology recently received the 1st Lee Myung-sik Professor Award at the 2025 Spring Academic Conference of the Korean Society of Parkinson's Disease and Abnormal Movement Disorders. This award was established to honor the achievements of the late Professor Lee Myung-sik, the first president of the Korean Society of Parkinson's Disease.
Professor Kim received the award for his research titled "The role of dual-receptor nuclear medicine examinations for early diagnosis of cortical-basal ganglia syndrome." He discovered a method to differentiate idiopathic Parkinson's disease and cortical-basal ganglia syndrome early using dual-phase nuclear medicine imaging, which simultaneously captures brain blood flow and dopamine receptors. Cortical-basal ganglia syndrome is a type of atypical Parkinson's disease that has been difficult to differentiate until now.
Professor Kim said, "I hope this research will help with the early treatment of Parkinson's disease." This research was published in February of last year in the international journal "Clinical Nuclear Medicine," which is at the SCIE level.
