Gachon University Gil Medical Center announced on the 24th that Professor Baek Jeong-heum has been appointed as the president of the Korean Society of Surgical Oncology. His term begins on the 1st of next month and lasts for one year.
Professor Baek was inaugurated as the new president at the 2025 International Conference and 20th Regular General Assembly of the Korean Society of Surgical Oncology held on the 22nd.
The Korean Society of Surgical Oncology was established in 2005 as the Korean Society of Clinical Oncology and changed its name to emphasize its expertise in surgical oncology in 2014. Currently, it has over 1,100 members who are medical professionals treating cancer.
Since 2014, the society has held the International Conference (SISSO), inviting presidents of the American Society of Surgical Oncology and the European Society of Surgical Oncology to give special lectures and sharing academic achievements with medical professionals worldwide.
President Baek noted, "Recent cancer treatment is a global trend that emphasizes holistic treatment regardless of the distinction between internal and external medicine." He added, "The society will strive to play a leading role in the research of solid tumor treatments by enhancing collaboration on clinical research, communication, education, and information exchange with relevant domestic and international institutions."
