Go Han-seung, chairman of the Korean Bio Industry Association, said in his New Year's address on the 3rd, "The National Bio Committee will provide new opportunities for the domestic bio industry," and "We will create a sustainable bio industry through support for overseas market entry, strengthening international cooperation, nurturing talent, and creating an industrial ecosystem."
Go, who serves as the president of the Future Business Planning Division of Samsung Electronics, was confirmed for a second term as chairman of the association on the 24th of last month. He was also elected as a private member of the National Bio Committee, which was launched on the 23rd of last month. The National Bio Committee is an organization established to foster the bio industry as a key national growth engine, and Go is expected to perform various roles, including formulating mid- to long-term strategies, enhancing global competitiveness, regulatory innovation, and nurturing talent.
Go noted, "Concerns about trade risks have been raised with the inauguration of the second term of Donald Trump's administration in the United States," but he also expected that this year the bio industry in our country will continue its growth trend.
Go stated, "Last year, despite challenging circumstances such as high exchange rates and dampened investment sentiment, our country's bio industry made significant progress," adding, "Domestic biohealth exports hit an all-time high, and South Korea's capabilities in new drugs, biosimilars, and contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) have stood out in the global market."
He said, "With the launch of the National Bio Committee, our government will focus not only on cultivating red bio and digital convergence bio but also on green bio and white bio," and he added, "We will actively respond to trade changes following the inauguration of Trump's second term."
The bio industry is classified into red, green, and white bio depending on the application areas. Red bio refers to biomedicine and healthcare, green bio to personalized innovative foods, biological resources, and plant factories, and white bio to biofuels, biorefineries, and bioplastics.
