The domestic gene-editing specialist corporation, JinCore, has been recognized by the government as a corporation holding national strategic technology. A gene editor is an enzyme complex that cuts out desired genes.
The Ministry of Science and ICT noted on the 23rd that JinCore's "ultra-small gene editing technology (TaRGET)" falls under the national strategic technology of next-generation gene editing.
Corporations recognized for national strategic technology have a market capitalization of over 100 billion won and, if they attract more than 10 billion won in investments over the past five years and receive an A grade or higher from at least one professional evaluation agency, can apply for "super-gap technology (deep tech) special listing."
The Ministry of Science and ICT reviewed 17 cases received in the third national strategic technology certification application and recognized that JinCore possesses and manages national strategic technology. JinCore is a gene-editing specialist corporation founded by CEO Kim Yong-sam, a graduate of the Korea Bioinformation Center. JinCore's ultra-small gene editing technology is gaining attention as a foundational technology that reduces side effects by significantly decreasing the size of gene editors while enabling precise gene corrections, paving the way for the development of therapeutic agents.
The director of the science and technology policy bureau at the Ministry of Science and ICT said, "National strategic technology is a key driving force for securing scientific and technological sovereignty and technological security capabilities in a situation where technological hegemony competition is intensifying," and added, "We will expand growth support for promising strategic technologies to swiftly commercialize national strategic technology."
